Frequently Asked Questions

Who should get tested?

Anyone who is sexually active should consider getting tested for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, especially those under the age of 25 or those who engage in high-risk behaviors like having unprotected sex. Even if you aren't experiencing symptoms, regular testing is recommended as both infections can be asymptomatic.

What are the risk factors for getting Chlamydia and Gonorrhea?

The primary risk factors for contracting Chlamydia and Gonorrhea include having unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected partner. Additional risk factors include having multiple sexual partners, a previous history of STDs, and engaging in sexual activity at a young age.

What happens if Gonorrhea or Chlamydia is left untreated?

If left untreated, both Chlamydia and Gonorrhea can lead to severe health complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, chronic pain, and life-threatening pregnancy complications. Gonorrhea can also increase your risk of contracting HIV. It's crucial to seek treatment as soon as possible if you test positive.

What are the symptoms of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea infection?

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea often show no symptoms, but when they do, symptoms can include abnormal discharge from the genitals, a burning sensation during urination, frequent urination, abdominal or pelvic pain, and painful intercourse. Other symptoms might include testicular pain in men and heavier periods or bleeding between periods in women.

What Should You Do If You Test Positive For Chlamydia or Gonorrhea?

If you test positive, contact your doctor immediately to discuss treatment options. Both infections can be treated with antibiotics. It's essential to complete the full course of medication and follow up with a retest to ensure the infection has cleared. Additionally, inform any recent sexual partners so they can get tested and treated as well.

How often should I get tested?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that sexually active individuals, particularly women under 25 and those with risk factors, get tested for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea at least once a year. If you engage in high-risk sexual activities, more frequent testing may be necessary.
